The baritone Yannick Debus was born in Hamburg, Germany. He studied at the Academy of Music in Lübeck majoring in both singing and music theory. For his master degree and his soloist diploma he moved to Basel studying with Marcel Boone at the Music Academy and with Rosa Dominguez at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Additionally he has been a private student of the the renowned dutch voice teacher Margreet Honig in Amsterdam for two years. From 2020 till 2022 he has been a member of the international opera studio of the Zürich Opera House.
In an academy production of Mozart‘s Le Nozze di Figaro he gained his first stage experience in the title role of “Figaro“. Since then he has been giving guest perfomances at several opera houses and opera festivals in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Among them are performances in Humperdinck’s fairy tale opera Hänsel und Gretel at the „Junge Oper Schloss Weikersheim Festival“ in summer 2017 where he sang the role of the father, his debut in the role of „Guglielmo“ in Mozarts Così fan tutte in 2018 at the „Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg“. In 2019 he performed the role of „Emireno“ from Händel’s Ottone, Re di Germania at the „Festwochen der Alten Musik“ in Innsbruck as well as portraying the „Kaiser Overall“ in Viktor Ullmann’s Der Kaiser von Atlantis, his debut at the Theatre Basel. Shortly after followed his debut at the Zürich Opera House where he could be seen as „Kilian“ in Weber’s Freischütz and „Sprecher“ in Mozart’s Zauberflöte.
In June 2021 he recorded Webers Freischütz with René Jacobs and the Freiburger Barock Orchestra singing the roles of Ottokar and Kilian. Working again with René Jacobs he sang the title role in Telemann’s Orpheus in Basel in November 2021.
In upcoming performances Debus can be seen as Schaunard in Puccini’s La Bohème as well as in the title role of Jakob Lenz by Wolfgang Rihm, both at the Zürich Opera House.
